Last Train

Last Train – photo by Wild Thing

Late night farewells
Up early
Light rain
Grey day

Dimly lit depot
Sleep weary travelers
Running away

Cheap suitcase
Hands shake
Exact change
Ticket purchased

Head down
Eyes darting
She waits in
Corner shadows

Conductor
Line forms
Rain splashed
Window seat

Train moves
Slow … jerky
Relief exhaled

Truck stops
He runs in
“Next train?”

White faced
“… no … last train.”
